Rugby Returns to the Hilltop

Press Release
16 February 2016

St. Edward's University Rugby Club is set to play their first game on campus since the club's formation in 1969. The defending two time Lone star Collegiate Conference Champions are set for a fiery encounter with the match pitting the undefeated Hilltoppers against rivals, UT-Dallas. These two clubs have a storied history with the Hilltoppers beating UTD in the championship game two seasons ago. A title the Austin-based college club has yet to relinquish.

Head Coach Steve Corcoran is aware of the enormity of the task at hand “This is the biggest game in club history, we are playing on campus for the first time in nearly half a century and it coincides with the university's Alumni Weekend. We have a proud history at St. Edwards and are expecting a crowd full of our former players who would have given their back teeth to have played on campus.”
UTD, currently sitting in 4th place in conference standings, will have plenty to play for themselves with a win consolidating their place in the play-offs.

Corcoran adds, “I’m sure they haven’t forgotten the Championship Game a couple of years ago, we beat them in their backyard and they will be looking to return the favor this weekend. There is nothing they would love to do more than beat us in such an iconic game for our club”

It is an important round for the Lone Star Conference with first place Angelo State taking on third place UT-San Antonio, this weekend's results will determine the final seedings for the playoffs the following week in San Antonio. St. Edwards are currently tied in first place with Angelo State, though sit in second place due to an inferior points difference.

A detail that has not been lost on Corcoran, who promises an entertaining show. “San Angelo currently have a +34 point lead on us in the for and against department, which means we don’t have the luxury of playing conservative if we want to finish as the top seed. We are a naturally attacking side and will be throwing the kitchen sink at them for 80 minutes, every point will count which adds to the excitement of the day”

The game kicks off at 11am on the main field at St. Edwards University 3001 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX. Texas Rugby Referee Ross Wojcik will officiate.
