2015 Rugby Texas Boys Rankings - Preseason Week 2

Katy breaking the gainline against Cy-Fair at Ruggapalooza
With only one event occurring this weekend, you might think that there would be little change in the rankings. But the was one cancelled match this weekend (Plano at Heart of Texas) and a couple of Houston-area rugby sides did not make it to Ruggapalooza. Also, Ruggapalooza's host, St Thomas HS, had a full three sides at the warm-up tournament. In HS rugby, such depth must count for something.

The Katy Barbarians trade places from last week with The Woodlands Youth because Katy arrived at Granger Stadium with more depth, speed, and size than they had at the end of last season and The Woodlands has admitted to less numbers this year than last. Katy also has a smart and big flanker, Bronson Teles, who was named to the Reserves of the HS All-American squad.

St Thomas earns a bump above Allen HS based on depth alone. Kingwood climbs two places because they showed some experience on their side AND they have produced a HS All-American in Dillon Shotwell. Dillon is just a junior, but he moves around the field of play like a man among boys.

St. Pius X only moves down because Cy-Fair HS arrived at Granger with many more players than they had last year. Cy-Fair also has several more coaches than last year - the most notable addition being former Rice Coach and Houston Old Boy, Eddie Brown.

We welcome Lamar HS of Houston to the rankings. Lamar is coached by HARC's Spencer Wheat and, if you look closely at the picture above, received their first jerseys from HARC. Solid work by a D1 club supporting Youth Rugby!

Heart of Texas (H.O.T.) had to cancel their scheduled match against Plano because H.O.T. did not have enough numbers to make a full squad. They drop to the bottom this week. We do not expect them to stay in that position long, though. H.O.T. encompasses the Temple/Killeen/Copperas Cove area of Central Texas where Texas A&M - Central Texas (Killeen, TX) is expected to make an announcement about rugby this week. H.O.T. is coached by former Notre Dame College assistant rugby coach, Dan Chase.

If it wasn't for the baby faces, you wouldn't know these were HS-aged student-athletes!
