St Edward's nips Texas

St Edward's made the short trip across Austin starting four freshmen against a Longhorn 1st XV still smarting from a loss to OU last Friday. The match was described as very physical and back & forth with enough hard-hitting to see three players from each team leave the pitch injured.  The Hilltoppers nipped the Longhorns 29-27.

St Edward's coach Brannen Ellyson praised Texas' All-American stating, "Taylor Hayes is a great player. He literally created all of the Longhorns' points." With the Hilltoppers focused on stopping Hayes, the 'Horns were able to get the ball wide quickly. When Hayes left the field due to injury, the game changed enough to St Edward's favor that they were able to stay ahead.

The Hilltoppers opened up with two tries, then the teams traded tries the remainder of the game. Each team scored five tries, but the Hilltoppers hit 2 conversions to Texas' 1 conversion. A late yellow card to St Edward's saw them finish the match with 14 fielded.

St Edward's gives credit to Nick Estenen, freshman lock, for scoring two tries and paying a great match as a freshman. However, St Edward's Man of the Match was Connor McNally from Westlake HS for scoring two tries and creating defensive chaos for the 'Horns with his quickness and delivery.

In other cross-conference news, Texas Christian won the Battle for the Iron Skillet in a 21-3 victory over Southern Methodist tonight at Gateway Park in Ft Worth.
